A T1 is a dedicated high-speed digital connection used for voice or data communications.  A voice T1 line transmits at a speed of about 1.544 megabits per second.  Connection times are quick and talk paths are clear. 

Each voice T1 line consists of 24 channels.  These channels can be used for voice communications.  The channels are used only during the call, freeing them up for others to use.  This shared configuration makes it possible to have one T1 service up to 100 users in a moderate telephone usage company. 

Both incoming and outgoing calls can be routed over the T1.  Incoming calls typically start with the first channel while outgoing calls route from the last channel. You can also designate some channels for incoming or outgoing calls only.  T1 routing is simple and transparent to the users.

Reports are typically generated for T1 lines that indicate usage on a per channel basis.  This can help you correctly size your T1 and help you to know when you need to add another T1 to your business phone system.  When ordering your T1 ask about reports available to you. 

Voice T1 lines are economical.  Your business can recognize phone savings during the first year of using a T1.  Prices on T1s have dropped considerably since they were first introduced.  Most central offices now have the upgraded facilities needed to operate T1s.  If you looked into getting a T1 in the past but didn’t because of price concerns think about re-evaluating and updating your pricing.  Chances are the prices have come down and the T1 lines will be much more affordable.
