To better explain the T3 definition, it helps first to know what the “T” stands for. Bell Labs originally developed multiplexed telecommunication carrier systems to service first their internal needs and then later, the needs of their Internet and network customers in North America and Japan. The “T” is in part, a reference to “T-Carrier”, and is a generic designator for those digital systems.
The European standard is the “E-Carrier”, and is used worldwide, with the exception of North America and Japan. The T-Carriers are set up in levels of digital hierarchy known as “Trunks”. So a T# is also known as a “Trunk-Level 3″. Now let us look further into the examination of the T3 definition.
The original application of T-Carrier systems was for the transmission of digitized voice signals. When larger businesses began to outgrow the more limited access of the T1, 24-channel system, the need to expand upon the number of channels to provide better telecommunication services to customers was the next step. T2 took data access to another level, but as data exchange between companies escalated, T3 service was developed.
The question of “What is T3 Internet service?” becomes almost synonymous with “What is T3?” at this point.
The T3 Definition
T3 access is a digital Wide Area Network (WAN) service that transfers data at 45 Megabytes per second (Mbps). This is a rounded-off approximation, as speeds will vary with the service needs and access of customers. While a T1 access will utilize 64 channels, a T3 access uses 672 channels. T3 access is equivalent to the combined data transfer rates of 28 T1s.
What T3 telecommunication services provide to businesses is no bottlenecking of data, and immediate, smooth data transfer from one access point to the next. The true T3 definition is the rise of the machine. It is the rise of service access to make the most of what the machine is capable of in the first place.
