T3 Bandwidth: A Range Of Power

The range of power offered by T3 bandwidth is up to 44.736 megabytes per second (Mbps). To put it into simpler terms, it is the equivalent of 28 T1 lines, or 672 phone lines capable of transferring data at 64 kilobytes per second (kbps).

T3 bandwidth used to be exclusively delivered on twisted pair copper wires, like T1 lines, but is now starting to move into the more practical fiber-optic lines that make it more readily available and easier to install. However, the “dark fiber” being installed by telecommunications companies to home sites is threatening to make T3 lines, and even T1 lines, obsolete in some markets.

While there are many applications suitable for the use of the power of T3 bandwidth, such as large computer networks, video conferencing, and even ATMs, special equipment must be used to suit the powerful interface of the T3 line.

This can incur greater costs to the telecommunications consumer, which is why the power behind T3 bandwidth is not as popular as that of the T-1. In some cases, it is more practical for companies to “bundle” separate T1 lines to equate to the power of a single T3 line. Overall, T3 bandwidth is the next step up from the range of power of a T1 line, if the company can afford to absorb the cost of that power.
