T1 Basics – What you need to know
A T1 is a high-speed digital circuit. It offers professional grade transmission with a speed of 1.544 Mbps. The T1 voice service provides a reliable dedicated line with 24 channels.
The 24 channels on the T1 are fluid meaning that they are flexible to be used as needed. They are not assigned to any particular user but reside in a line pool for use as required. Once a call is released the channel is then free again. Because of its flexibility each T1 can comfortably accommodate between 50 and 100 average users. Telephone intense companies such as call centers will require more. Larger bandwidth and greater speed is obtained with additional T1s. For instance, a T3 is available which is equivalent to 28 T1s and has a speed of 43.232 Mbps.
T1 voice service can be used for both incoming and outgoing calls. You can port your main business telephone number to the T1. This helps by providing many lines to accept incoming calls. T1 voice service can also accommodate direct inward dial (DID) numbers. These are typically available in banks of 10 and can be assigned to individual phones to be used like a private line. The DID numbers bypass the telephone switchboard and ring directly on the individually assigned phones.
Each T1 is a digital circuit and can come into your office on either fiber or on standard cable. The circuit terminates on a smart jack, which is a test point for the circuit. From there the T1 can be terminated into the telephone system using a connecting cable. Some areas require the use of a CSU as an interface point. This helps to determine where the problem is if the circuit were to go down.
