T1 Telephone Lines
T1 Phone Lines - Low rates for both local and long
distance service
What is a T1?
A T1 is a high-speed digital circuit that can transmit voice, data or both. The T1 transmits at a speed of 1.544 Mbps – much faster than
standard telephone lines. Each T1 circuit consists of 24 channels that can be used for communication. The T1 originates at the
central office where it is constantly monitored. The T1 can be used for incoming calls as well as outgoing calls, thereby extending the
amount of calls you can receive at a time.
The T1 can also be used in conjunction with DID or direct inward dial service. This allows individual numbers to be assigned to each
telephone unit. These DID numbers can be dialed directly from the outside without the need to go through the console or
switchboard.
How Does a T1 Work?
The T1 is a digital connection that uses fiber or a combination of fiber and copper to transmit voice and data. The T1 comes into the
building on two pair of wires that are terminated onto a smart jack interface point. From here the circuit can be extended into the
telephone system or the network.
The T1 uses channels for communication. Each of the 24 channels can be used by anyone who needs it. Once a call hangs up the
channel is again available for use. In this way the flexible nature of the T1 allows you to have much fewer lines than telephone users in
the system. A typical company may use one T1 with 24 channels to easily accommodate 50 to 100 users.
T1 telephone lines can save you money. While there is an installation fee and monthly fees these are usually made up quickly in the
savings you can see. T1 lines are very fast. They can transmit lots of information quickly. Finally, a T1 line is very
reliable. T1 lines are monitored and if there is a problem it can often be corrected remotely.
