T-1 Voice – Choosing T-1 Service
What is a T-1?
A T-1 voice circuit is a high-speed dedicated digital line. The T-1 is made up of 24 channels. These channels can be used for
voice, data or a combination of both services. A T-1 transmits data at a fast rate, approximately 1.544 megabits per second.
How does a T-1 work?
The T-1 circuit is generally a fiber connection but can come from the central office on regular copper wires. The
circuit provides 24 channels using only 2 pair of wires. The circuit is brought into the premise and a smart jack is provided. From
here, a connection can be made into the telephone system for voice or into the network for data. The voice channels are flexible and reside
in a “line pool” arrangement. Any phone with access can use the next available channel to make or receive a call. As soon as the call
is completed the channel again becomes available for another call.
Is a T-1 cost effective?
A T-1 is the most cost effective method of voice circuits available. Because of its flexibility an entire office can share one
T-1. Typically you will need one T-1 voice line for every 50 to 100 users, based on average usage. The T-1 voice circuit can be
configured to take your main incoming telephone number. This is helpful because many lines are then able to back up the main number so that
there is never a busy signal. Additionally, DID service can be used to provide direct inward dial numbers to employees. These phone
numbers act like private lines and can be dialed directly from the outside, bypassing the need for an operator to direct the call.
Do I need a T-1?
You may need a T-1 voice circuit if your call volume is more than 20,000 long distance calls per month. Additionally, you may need a T-1
to accommodate both your main telephone number and DID numbers effectively. If your company is growing, a T-1 can help you be ready for the
anticipated growth. Call centers will benefit greatly by using a T-1. T-1 pricing is competitive so compare prices based on service,
delivery and features.
