SBC Communications Inc was formed as a result of a name change voted for at the 1995 AGM of Southwestern Bell Corp. Southwestern
Bell Corporation was one of the original seven ‘Baby Bell’ regional Bell Operating Companies, formed as a result of the 1984 Department of
Justice ruling forcing American Telephone and Telegraph company to divest its regional telephone companies.
SBC went on a purchasing spree and bought several large telecommunications companies including some of the other original Bell companies and
the following :
- Bell Pacific Telesis serving California and Nevada
- SNET in Southern New England
- Ameritech serving Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin
- SBC was named as Fortune Magazine’s “America’s Most Admired Telecommunications Company” which it held for almost 8 consecutive
years up to 2004.
SBC & AT&T Purchase
After a previous round of failed merger talks, in 2005 SBC purchased AT&T for $16 billion. The following year Bell South was
purchased for $86 billion making this the largest telecoms takeover in the USA. All AT&T companies now trade around the US using a
state based geographical based name.
With the decline of home phone line sales AT&T Inc are looking into new media markets such as delivering television and voice services to
consumers over IP.
Having an exclusive deal to distribute the much sought after Apple iPhone in the USA can only help to grow the company’s consumer
business.
With revenues of over $63 billion and a net income of over $7 billion, AT&T Inc is one of the largest telecoms companies in the US with its
main competitors being Qwest, Sprint Nextel and Verizon.
