Long Distance Service
Qwest is a global telecommunications company that provides voice and data services to businesses and individuals as well as to the wholesale
market. The company has a presence in the United States and across the world. Qwest is a leader in providing voice, video and data
services to homes and businesses. Their wired services include local and long distance voice, data and Internet DSL. They also
provide wireless services and partners in some areas with Sprint/Nextel.
Qwest has a local presence as the local telephone provider in areas of the southwest. In some of these same markets Qwest is also a
cable provider and also partners with DirecTV. Qwest sells its products through direct marketing as well as by partnering with other
companies.
Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the Qwest building is the 2nd tallest building in Denver, with 53 stories. Qwest was founded in 1996 and
has been growing ever since. Qwest founder, Philip Anschutz, owned the Southern Pacific Railroad and started installing a fiber network
along the route. In 1998 the Southern Pacific Railroad merged with Union Pacific affording Qwest an even larger expanse of fiber
potential. This allowed Qwest to build a large fiber network in the United States.
Qwest has acquired several other telecommunications companies including Supernet an Internet provider and LCI a long distance company.
In 2000 Qwest merged with US West, a spinoff company from Bell. Qwest has not been without scandal. In 2000 they were found guilty of
“slamming”, an illegal practice that changes customer’s long-distance service without proper permission. Later the company was involved in
some accounting scandals and ordered to pay large restitution fines.
Still, Qwest continues to be a leader in the telecommunications field providing long distance, broadband data and VoIP services
globally. In 2004 Qwest became the first provider to offer stand-alone DSL service, which is Internet service that does not require a
traditional land line.
