DSL
DSL or digital subscriber line, is a line that connects at speeds up to 3Mbps. The exact speed, however, is actually determined by the distance you are from the provider’s equipment or DSLAM. Typically, DSL speed is somewhat slower than T1 speed. A DSL is sometimes less reliable than a T1 circuit primarily because a DSL transmits over standard copper trunks. Optical carrier lines are large groups of T1s, which may be used for large business long distance applications. An OC3 is the equivalent of 100 T1s and has a speed of 155Mbps. OC lines are also available in larger amounts as well such as OC12, OC48 and OC192. The number associated with the OC is proportional to the data rate of the bitstream carried by the digital signal.
