Long Distance For Business
Businesses need long distance service that suits their
specific needs. When choosing long distance for your
business opt for solutions that are both cost effective and
reliable.
DSL
DSL or digital subscriber line, is a line that connects at
speeds up to 3Mbps. The exact speed, however, is actually
determined by the distance you are from the provider’s
equipment or DSLAM. Typically, DSL speed is somewhat
slower than T1 speed. A DSL is sometimes less reliable
than a T1 circuit primarily because a DSL transmits over
standard copper trunks. DSL is less expensive than T1
service.
T1 lines are the new standard in business communications.
While many small to medium sized businesses previously chose
DSL lines T1’s have come down in price making them much more
affordable. Even small businesses may be able to save
money by using a T1. A T1 uses fiber optic technology to
provide 24 circuits. These circuits are flexible allowing
for use by any phone in your office. Taking advantage of this
flexibility allows up to 100 users to share one T1
circuit.
A T1 is also inherently more stable and reliable than a
DSL. The T1 is monitored at the central office and can
often be repaired remotely if it does have a problem.
While installation costs must be factored in a typical business
often starts to realize savings in just months. The T1
transmits at a speed of 1.544 Mbps, which is faster than most
standard modems.
Optical Carrier
Optical carrier lines are large groups of T1s, which may be
used for large business long distance applications. An
OC3 is the
equivalent of 100 T1s and has a speed of 155Mbps. OC
lines are also available in larger amounts as well such as
OC12,
OC48 and
OC192.
The number associated with the OC is proportional to the data
rate of the bitstream carried by the digital signal.
