Ethernet Network – The Role of Ethernet in Computer Networks
Ethernet, in the most basic form, is the technology used in interconnections between computers and various technological devices. Through signals transmissions, these devices are able to exchange data and important information.
Originally, the Ethernet technology was first thought of to be patterned from the known radio communications technology which makes use of the natural occurring radio wave signals in our atmosphere. However, because of its extreme unrestricted coverage, such technology seems unlikely to be used for guarded communications between supposedly only an exclusive number of computers.
Hence, this networking technology was assimilated with the use of light signals in the place of radio signals.
The term Ethernet itself came from two words: Ether which means “light-bearing” and Net which is short for network. In a general sense, it was a finalized technology that mainly applies the concept of data transfer via the use of light wave signals that passes through secured cable wirings.
When these cables are used to link a distinct family of computers and devices with each other, they form a network. And this web of connections is called Local Area Network or LAN.
The anatomy of the Ethernet technology is quite simple. A main frame is used as the guiding force of all transmissions. The main frame is the primary controller of the speed and the direction of all signals. By detecting the sources and destinations of such information-bearing conductions, the frame makes sure there will be no collision or confusion.
A specialized type of linking system is used to connect this main frame to all computers that needed to be linked. The earliest type of such system was the so-called coaxial cable, which is similar to the one used in televisions.
However, not all lnking devices are the same as they vary on the material and specifications used for their circuit board. Different materials offer different signal conducting capacities. That is why, it is important that the connector to be used is made from components that could support a certain distance between two devices. The two type of materials used in Ethernet technology are Fiber Optics and Copper wires.
There are also other segments that play an important role for Ethernet networks. These are the portable modules and connectors that make sure the physical layer standards of the other parts would match the standards of specific devices.
Having been around since the 1980s, the Ethernet network technology is the widest form of computer networking used for LANs. In the present, there are even more advanced and intricate versions that could cater to Wide Area Networks (WANs). Because of its efficacy in the field of easing information and data sharing, Ethernet is really a big step for the evolution of our technological lives.
