Dark Fiber Network – Making Your Business More Efficient
Most big companies and businesses are hesitant to obtain a dark fiber network for themselves simply because they think that it is too expensive and too difficult to maintain.
However, all of those ideas are nothing more than misconceptions about fiber optic technology.
Before delving further into obtaining your own dark fiber network, it is ideal to understand what dark fiber is and how it can greatly benefit your business.
During the 1990s, an abundance of fiber optical lines were placed underground, but were never used. Laying down these lines required extensive digging, causing obvious obstructions to the city streets and the general public.
To make it more efficient, phone companies, electrical companies, even municipalities packed excessive fiber cables so that they won’t have to do the same thing again in the near future.
Those fiber optic lines that were used are currently known as lit fibers while those that are not used is known as “unlit” or dark fiber.
Essentially, if light signals or pulses travel in the fiber they are known to be “lit up,” hence being unlit means there is no signal traversing a given cable.
Back in the day, only large telecommunications firms used fiber technology. In turn, they were the only ones leasing the unused strands to various other companies.
However, today, more and more large businesses and firms are turning to dark fiber, they are not only leasing them, but they are even creating their own dark fiber network to further increase their bandwidth and make their businesses more efficient.
