There are many kinds of technology available today. You can choose which one you can go for depending on the needs of your business. One type of popular technology is the VPN network. The Virtual Private Network gives the option of having two or more computers communicate with each other through a public channel over the Internet.

This kind of network can be configured according to your business needs. It is also a very flexible type of technology, making it the ideal tool to use for your company. If you want to choose the right kind of VPN then you need to find out its components and options available to you.

Back in the day when the internet was foreign; people, business and computers in different offices communicated with each other using telephone wires.

Of course, as businesses grew faster, more efficient communication was needed and the telephone wires were replaced by higher volume wires. One example of this high-speed circuit was the T3.
The main concept of how systems communicated was the same, but the means were entirely different.

These connections no longer become physical. The information was shared using the local ISP circuits over the internet. This was sent and received similar to how it was done when computers were actually physically connected.

Hence, VPN or virtual private networks are named as such because they do not have a physical makeup, but they are still hard-wired in virtual reality.

You might wonder, what about security when transferring data online? Of course, the security was unreliable in old systems; however, with the VPN it enforces a more reliable security. It encrypts data that is sent and received.

You can have a variety of protocols, depending on what you need and who you communicate with. Be assured that when you use this network, the information is not only encrypted, but it is also encapsulated and transmitted in its own pathway or tunnel over the internet. Thus, this method ensures a very secure network transfer for your files and information.

Before you create or go for your own VPN network, take into consideration several things.

One, find out who will use the system.

Two, determine where these data and information will be sent and how frequent it would be.

Three, prepare a list of the software systems that you currently utilize in your locations. You might need to configure these so that they will communicate with each other.

Finally, take into consideration the security of your data. Ask yourself how secure you want these to be as it will affect the kind of protocol you will use to secure it. If you want more information for the VPN network, you can find these online as well as with your vendor.

As you are searching for a new telecom provider, the following is a list of 10 questions that you must ask before you make the final decision. These questions mainly pertain to working with an agent/broker or consultant. Most of these will apply if you decide to go directly to the carrier.

Pre-Sale

1. What type of experience do you have in the telecom industry and which companies have you worked for?

2. How many quotes am I to expect from your company and which carriers will they be coming from?

3. What kind of fee do you charge and how do you base this cost?

4. What kind of billing increments and surcharges are involved or included in the pricing?

Post Sale

5. Who handles the account after we sign the contract? Does this go to a provisioning team or project coordinator? Do you stay involved with this process?

6. When there is a service outage whom do we contact?

7. When there are billing issues or credits due, whom do we contact?

8. When our first bill comes in who will go through that with us to make sure we were charged what we were quoted?

9. Do you perform quarterly follow-ups to all of your customers to ensure that they are satisfied with the service?

10. At the end of our term what happens? Who will contact us with updated pricing and terms?

Things to pay attention to:

Does the sales representative take the time to understand your business, or he just selling you something? Why is this important?

The importance of understanding your business is vital to offering you the correct telecom services.

A simple example of this is call patterns for long distance calls.

A carrier can offer a great rate for state to state calls, but if a majority of the calls are made in-state, this doesn’t help lower your overall long distance bill.

Again, a very simple example, but understanding how your business operates really helps us offer you the proper services that will enable your telecom systems to run more efficiently.

“As a long time [leading MPLS VPN provider giant] MegaPath customer, we look to the company’s Site-to-Site MPLS VPN service to deliver cost effective connectivity without sacrificing reliability or performance. MegaPath’s leading-edge service enables us to deploy the latest bandwidth intensive applications, which increase employee productivity and customer satisfaction. We have not seen any other secure connectivity solution that offers the value we receive from the MegaPath Site-to-Site MPLS VPN service,” said Dianne Hurley, Vice President of Information Technology of The BRIAD Group, which is the largest T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant operator. The quote was lifted from the BusinessWire press release dated May 13, 2008.

This shows that there is a growing interest in the use of MPLS VPNs.

The MPLS VPNs has already entered the mainstream business that survey results should they would become the norm with the next one to two years. So far, most of the businesses that participated in the survey have reported that they were satisfied with their choice of implementing the MPLS VPN. They also expressed satisfaction over their choice of supplier.

But the survey also revealed that there were also criticisms hurled against MPLS VPNs as some said that there is still room for improvement by technology suppliers. One comment said that installation time takes too long. Although prices are generally seen as reasonable, another problem that was presented was mistakes committed in the billing department.

Another problem that cropped up is on customer service. The level of expertise is not satisfactory even though many commended customer service representatives and the speed of response by the suppliers’ call centers got high scores.

But these problems are part of the movement of MPLS VPNs into the mainstream market of advanced technology. But the technical problems would decrease and service is also expected to improve as MPLS VPNs is further developed.

The VPN (Virtual Private Network), based on the Computer Encyclopedia, is “a private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier’s network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.”

The IP VPNs from carriers as network system, meanwhile, as defined as systems where “carriers offer multipoint networks that accept only IP packets from the customer and run over an IP core. These virtual private routed networks (VPRNs) connect the customer’s IP router to the provider’s IP router and require some coordination.”
