T1 Connection: Choosing the Right Broadband Connection for your Needs

Today, you can find many ISPS’s or Internet service providers offering a good variation of their broadband services.

You will find many different services to choose from, so choosing the right T1 connection could be a challenging job.

High-speed transmissions of voice and data are often referred to as broadband technology. For this type of connection, streaming online videos as well as transferring large data files is not a problem.

Before applying for a particular Internet service, you would need to think about how fast you would need the information. You can find various Internet services that have varying speeds, so you can easily look for the right one to suit you.

One example of a reliable and fast broadband connection is the T1 line. It has 24-channels and can transmit voice and data at a speed of 1.522 Mbps. It is a highly engineered circuit that is monitored at the central office.

This circuit is then routed to the customer via a fiber cable allowing for a high speed transmission of the data. In the premises, the DS1 is connected to the customers’ main phone systems.

If you want something much faster than the T1, then you can go for the T3 line. Its transmission rate is hugely different from the T1 in that, it can transmit at a rate of 43.232 Mbps.

This is highly recommended for large file transfers and application that are needed by companies as well as extensive bandwidth usages. Examples of these services would include online video streaming or web hosting applications.

Having a marked difference from the T1, a total of 28 would be needed to match the speed of the T3, it is the ideal service used for network backbones, campus environments and business applications.

Another popular type of connection that most people are familiar with would be the DSL service.DSL services are much slower than the T1 lines and its speed depends on its distance from the central office.

A good thing with this type of connection is that it is possible to set it up in residences and other small locations. It does have disadvantages too, DSL service actually costs more than the T1 line and its service is not as reliable.

Some providers also specialize in offering optical carrier lines which pass through the SONET fiber network and transmits data with a speed of 51.84 Mbps. Some bigger optical carrier lines include the following configurations: OC3, OC12, OC48 and OC192.

The number indicated in the name indicates the size of that particular circuit. For example, OC192 lines are the largest and fastest connections available as it can transmit with a speed of up to 1976.64Mbps.

When choosing an Internet service, you need to take into consideration the price as well as the needs for your business.

T1 lines are ideal for small businesses since they provide a reliable and fast speed. They can transmit data efficiently and are flexible enough to allow you to add applications in the future.

If you go for this type of service, then be aware that there will be monthly charges since this is the least leased type of service.

Standard connections are usually preferred by companies because of the potential savings it can give. The T1 is a dependable service that allows for monitoring at the central office itself.

This allows for an immediate resolution to possible problems and sometimes the repairs can be done remotely.

If you need a line that requires a digital transmission link and can work with both data as well as voice; T1 phone lines are the best ones to use. Business ventures can greatly benefit from this.

It has the capacity of 1.554 Mbps, which makes the DS1 the fastest among its competitors. Connecting to the Internet, public phone or even a private network is feasible with this phone line.

T1-DS1 allows you to have up to 24 concurrent conversations and it uses a distinct channel for the extent of the call. It also permits the same channel to be used by another user, once a call has ended by returning it back to the pool.

With this type of phone line, you can use it for data and voice transmission which makes it very suitable for small businesses to use. With the DS1 you can use the port of your own business phone to conduct simultaneous conversations.

One great feature of this phone line is that it allows you to use the DID or Direct Inward Dial. Using this allows you access to contact a direct number that rings on your phone. With this function, you can assist in reducing the amount of calls your attendant is getting, leaving her some room to do other necessary tasks.

Another great advantage that the T1 lines gives you is that one 24-channel T1 can easily service an office group of 50 to 100 moderate telephone users. Although for businesses, like call centers they may need a more extensive setup and more phone lines.

Incoming and outgoing calls are not a problem with this line. You can receive both kinds of calls. You can determine the exact number of times you use the phone and whether you need to add more or take away some lines because usage reports are available for you. It has no added cost and is a great way to gauge the performance of the T1 lines.

T1 phone lines are known for being reliable. Interruptions in communication seldom happen and the programs that allow you to direct the phone calls to another line in case a glitch happens are entirely possible.

This is a great opportunity for small businesses. They can now get connected and be in range with digital technology. The T1 is essentially connected to the phone system or to the data network via a connection point from the provider. CSU’s or Customer Service Units are also available providing a good test point in the event when problems occur.

With its speed and large bandwidth, the T1 lines are highly popular with small businesses. Its bandwidth can allow you to use a number of Internet applications, stream online videos or even hold conferences without any problems. Even large files will be no hassle when moved and saved in this system.

The digital signals offered by the T1 line enables you to receive a clear and crisp sound. With this kind of service, a business can easily realize how advantageous having the T1 system would be to have.

Most people are familiar with the regular DS1 line, but for those who aren’t, it is actually a high- speed digital connection capable of transmitting data at a rate of 1.544 Mbps.

It is the perfect circuit to use if you have a small, medium or large business for your telecommunication needs. A bigger group of the DS1 lines can provide you with faster connection speed and can serve a great backbone for large networks.

One such connection is the OC48. This high-speed large carrier can provide you with a rate that is equivalent to about 5376 DS1 lines. The OC48 can give you a transfer rate for both voice and data at a speed of 2.4 gigabits per second.

If you notice, a single DS1 line has 24 channels and they can be set for either data or voice transfers. It uses a fiber optics lines to transmit the signal allowing the DS1 line to send the data at a much faster speed.

There are several guidelines you can use when you’re trying to determine the type of DS1 service you should use.

However, a general assessment of your telephone and network requirements should give you a good idea. If you want a more in-depth research, you can start by looking at the telephone usage and worth of telephone bills you are getting each month.

You can also trace the total long distance calls that you make each month. If you want to do it the easier way, you can get in touch with your current provider and obtain a report or a traffic study for your network. This will yield accurate data on your line usage for a certain period that you want to study.

Once you have decided which service to go for, make sure that you add about 10% extra room for future growth. If you see that the peak times might be too much, then you can make it at an extra 20% so that you can have more room for future needs. When your business is a call center, then you might require more room for future growth.

When using your DS1 line, consider that a voice line can be used for both inbound and outbound calls. You should consider porting your main listed business telephone number over to the T1 line.

This will give you the opportunity to accommodate simultaneous calls. You might also want to consider having a voice prompt system at the frontline so that you can accommodate calls efficiently and promptly.

You can use your Direct Inward Dialer or your DID along with your DS1 line. These can set aside specific phone systems that will enable them to be dialed directly from the outside.

These work much like private lines. DIDs are sold in blocks, consisting of 10 numbers per block, and they are very affordable to have. You can lease them for a small monthly fee. Having DID’s on your system can give your main console operator a breather since it doesn’t have to go through them. It is automatically directed to the main telephone console.

Your DS1 service is hooked up to your facility and terminated on a smart jack on the network equipment room. It then extends into the system or on through a CSU or Customer Service Unit. These CSU’s are test points which are helpful when you are troubleshooting problems.

The good thing with the DS1 line is that they are directly monitored at the central office which makes it easy to correct possible problems. They can even be treated remotely. In addition, it is also ideal to have a POTs line as a supplement in case there are major outages in your area. POTs stand for plain old trunks.

DS1 lines do need an initial setup and installation fee with some specific hardware required. You should be able to save a substantial amount of money from the recurring charges that you get every month compared to other lines.

Most companies that have chosen the DS1 line were able to gain back their initial cash out within the first year that they installed the service.
