Finding out more about the OC12
If you are familiar with the OC3 , but you want a faster connection speed then you might want to check out the OC12. You might be wondering how come there are so many fast carriers available today.
Well, if you actually study the amount of traffic the Internet has today, then you might just understand why these high-speed digital connections emerged.
Here are some of the technical capabilities of the OC12. These things might seem useless to the layman, however, it is essential in understanding the capabilities of this kind of service in comparison to other more familiar types of high-speed connection. If you find this all too confusing, then rest assured that you’re not the only one.
In fact, even ISP’s or service providers do not completely understand the capabilities of the OC12. Most of them are not even capable of explaining to their consumers the monthly estimate for an OC12 connection.
That’s a bit surprising, but it is true.
The OC12 line is still not used by that many commercial companies. This type of carrier can usually be found used by web-hosting companies that are about average, in terms of company size.
Even smaller Internet providers that function as sub contractors are also found to opt for this type of connection. It is ideal for wide area connections, but most will never use this as a backbone for their Internet service.
As for the technical aspect of the OC12, it has a connection speed that can reach up to 622.08 megabit per second. However, payload, or the actual data that is transferred will be at a rate of 601.344 Mbps. The repeater requirement or overhead for this type of carrier is about 20.736 Mbps.
To make it simple, having an OC12 line is the same as having three OC3 connections. This means it is equivalent to having 400 T1 lines , with each T1 line having a 24 conventional telephone lines.
Thus, having the OC12 is like having 9600 conventional telephone lines working at a much more incredible speed than the regular phone line.
That speed and power is essentially what you will be paying for when you choose the OC12. The cost for it can run into a couple hundred thousand dollars at the least.
With such a steep price, it is no wonder that most business, unless they are directly involved in the connectivity industry, have not explored this particular kind of high-speed digital connection.
