Bell South was one of the seven Baby Bell companies formed as a result of the 1984 U.S. Department of Justice ruling which forced American
Telephone and Telegraph Company to strip itself of its regional telephone companies. Bell South was the final regional company to keep its
original name and the Bell corporate logo.
AT&T Bell South Acquisition
In late 2006, AT&T Inc acquired Bell South for $86 billion in a share deal, retaining the AT&T name, and Bell South will cease
operating under its name in late 2007. The joint venture companies Cingular Wireless and YellowPages.com were retained as part of the
merger.
Bell South offers many phone and television services to residential and business customers, with a mixture of Bell South and AT&T branded
services offered during the transitional period.
Consumer telephone services range from local and long distance through to wireless services. Consumer internet services range from ‘DSL
Lite’ to a fast 6MBps ‘DSL Extreme’. Bell South’s DirecTV, a satellite based television service, offers over 250 channels available on
their premier package with a high definition service available.
The transitional period after the merger becomes obvious on the Bell South website as there are a range of both Bell South and AT&T products
on offer for businesses, with all enterprise services, and some small business services, being AT&T branded.
The AT&T Unity service allows small businesses unlimited calls between over 100 million business, home and wireless phones.
AT&T offers a vast product range to businesses from basic phone services all the way through to voice over IP and international managed
internet and network services.
