Telecommunication service is a broad category. As defined by the Federal Standard 1037C, the definition of telecommunication services is stated to be: 

1. Any service provided by a telecommunication provider, and;
2. A specific set of user-information transfer capabilities provided to a group of users by a telecommunications system.

This covers every form of distance communication up to and including telephone, cellular phones, computer networking, Internet, long distance phone service, wireless access networks, radio, broadcast, cable and satellite television - the list of providers is endless.

One thing that all of these have in common is that the telecommunication services provider is responsible for accepting, transmitting, and delivering the messages of the telecommunication services customer.

The provider provides access to the services through various calling plans, access options, and other communications availability, charging set rates to the customer for these services. With the breaking of the earlier telecommunications industry monopolies, many companies have found their way into this profitable industry.

What does these mean for the telecommunications customer? Because of the increased competition, many telecommunications companies have had to maintain lower rates for their calling plans and other services in order to remain competitive.

This has especially been noticed in long distance phone services, as the rates drop lower and lower, making long distance calling more affordable. More companies are now able to join the markets, making a viable presence in the industry.

More competition means reduced rates to customers. This all works together for both the customer and provider, bringing the world together with the provision and affordability of telecommunication services.
