"Stepping Up To The T1 Line"
A T1 line is a part of the "T-Carrier" system used in North America and Japan. The carrier lines are broken into
a rating hierarchy based upon the rate of voice or data that the lines are capable of transferring. A single T1
line is capable of transmitting data at rates of speed up to 1.5 megabytes per second (Mbps). This is equivalent to
24 voice conversations transmitted simultaneously.
As opposed to Plain Old Telephone System (POTS) lines, a T1 line uses advanced digital coding so that each of the
24 lines can operate in what is called "duplex" mode to transmit and receive telecommunications services at the
same time.
In addition, if it is an integrated T1 line, it can be configured for use of any combination of data and/or
voice lines up to the full 24 channels. This gives a tremendous advantage over other systems for those companies
looking to "step up" to the T1 line.
